A dream come true: visiting Petra
Ever since I saw pictures of Petra in National Geographic years ago I wanted to go there. In 2015 that dream finally came true. Visiting Petra was everything I expected it to be and more. We visited Petra as part of our tour through Jordan. Visiting Petra: some history The start of Petra goes back to before Christ. The Nabataean, nomad people from Western Arabia, took over caravan routes. This way they founded a sort of ‘caravan kingdom’, with Petra as the blossoming capitol. Most of the buildings in the centre of Petra were built between 9 BC and 40 AC. The water plumping through the Siq is from the…

2019 travels in review
We had a good travel year, last year. We traveled in Europe, mostly the western part. We had trips in The Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, France, Germany, Czech Republic and Spain. Our 2019 travels were fantastic in one word. January We started the New Year with friends in Almere. Playing board games and watching the fireworks. After this we started our 2019 travels with a visit to Uden on Ice our with my sister and nieces during Christmas break. Ice skating and tubing is so fun to do. On a weekend we went to the Open Air Museum in Arnhem, we did the ‘Elfstedentocht’ route. It was a winter only event.…

Tour through Jordan
We went to Jordan on a grouptour with a tourcompany called Koning Aap. We went with a group, not because you can’t go on your own to Jordan, because you definitely can, but because we wanted Yuri to have some friends. We imagined Yuri would look for 5 minutes at Petra and then have enough of it. While we would be fascinated longer by everything there was to see. Our tought was that if Yuri had friends to play with, he wouldn’t mind us staying longer at the places. We were right. Petra was already a long time high on our bucket list. So when we had the money and…

2018 travels in review
2020 has already started, and we have already made some trips. But in this post I want to take you back to 2018. We did a lot of trips, mostly in The Netherlands. It wasn’t the easiest year for us, but we got through it and we were still able to travel. Here are our 2018 travels per month. January A quiet month, we only took 3 trips. With Yuri’s class we went to castle de Haar and had a guided tour here. It was fun and informative. On a good level the kids learned a lot about how the owners have lived in the castle over the centuries. De…

4 fun campsites in The Netherlands with kids
Since Yuri’s birth, he’s been with us on our travels. We’ve camped around Europe and also a few times in The Netherlands. Most of the time when we’re on vacation in The Netherlands we stay in a holiday rental or a hotel, but luckily there have been a few times over the years the weather was nice enough for camping. Here are the 4 campsites in The Netherlands we’ve stayed at with a tent or campervan and what we think of them. 1.Camping ’t Schinkel The first of the campsites in The Netherlands we visited with Yuri. This fun campsite is in the middle of The Netherlands in Hoenderloo on…

5 Things to do in the Gorges du Verdon with kids
France has so many beautiful regions to explore! A few years ago we visited the Gorges du Verdon region in spring. Our lodgings were at campsite RCN Les Collines de Castellane in the town of Castellane. The weather was warm already (most days even hot) and there is plenty to do in the Gorges du Verdon with kids. A visit to the Gorges itself is not described in this article. We planned that for the last day of our trip, but since rain was predicted, we weren’t in for a day out on the water. So no Gorges, but a visit to grottes and Grasse that day. Things to see…

An afternoon in Ljubljana
We loved Ljubljana, the city has a laid-back vibe, and is perfect to stroll around in. That’s just what we did one afternoon in Ljubljana. We stood on a campsite on the edge of Ljubljana and took a bus to the center of town. It stopped right in front of our campsite and went all the way to the center of town, very easy. Here’s what is perfect to do when you stroll around Ljubljana one afternoon. Stroll around the center The city center with it’s broad, low traffic avenues is perfect for wandering around. Watch and enjoy the buildings still there from the Baroque and Jugendstil periods. We had…

Dreaming about long term traveling
I remember as a child looking at my globe and making up journeys I could take, where I would go. I could dream about this for hours. Others dreamed about their wedding gown or being a doctor when they’d grew up. I wanted to be an archaeologist and travel to Iran, Australia, the USA, basically everywhere. I dreamed of being in the Outback, like the characters of my favorite tv show The Flying Doctors. Go chasing those waterfalls in Australia. Wishing to explore the ruins of the Maya I read about in Archaeology books. I wanted to backpack in the National Parks of the USA, which I read about in…

Dreaming about (part-time) van life
Those idyllic pictures of people cozying up in their van or just outside their van. Or similarly a picture of a neverending highway, makes me want to hit the road and live the van life. What’s the draw in van life Why am I drawn to this picture of the van life? It’s the idylic of going wherever you wanna go. In theory, you can roadtrip around the World, and since I have a very lenghty bucketlist, that sounds divine. We would have our own place while traveling. A van looks like a payable solution to see the whole world. The cosily feeling of a VW van is appealing. The…

Campsites in Croatia with kids
In 2016 and 2017 we spent the Summer roadtripping in Europe, especially The Balkan. The first year we camped most of the time, in 2017 a little less, mainly because of the weather. In the south it was too hot to pitch a tent, let alone sleep in it with 40+ degrees Celsius temperatures. We should have brought a portable solar panel with us, we had so much sun. It would have made some things a lot easier. In 2016 it was our first time roadtripping with a tent. We did it again in 2017, you can say it’s something we love to do as a family. Why, well lot’s…
