    2020 travels in review

    January 14, 2021 / 4 Comments

As for us all, 2020 was completely different than we expected. We had only one trip abroad to Austria. Other than that we stayed in The Netherlands. Luckily we made some beautiful trips in The Netherlands during the Summer. So here are our 2020 travels from month to month. January Just like in 2019 we started the New Year at friends in Almere. We played board games and watched the fireworks. Our first outing was Uden on Ice with my nieces during Christmas break. Later in the month I went shopping with a friend in Uden, while Paul and Yuri had the day for themselves. The last day of the…

    September 3, 2020 / 57 Comments

We’ve traveled 3 times this year, once in February, when all the craziness was just starting (no lockdowns in Europe yet at that point). And twice during the rest of the year. In May for a long weekend and this Summer for a road trip. All within The Netherlands. Here are 10 tips we can give you from our experience for traveling in 2020. Traveling in 2020: know the rules Before you take off on your road trip, know the rules specific to the country and/or region you’re visiting. Moreover, keep yourselves to these rules. The Greatest and Best Forts in the World

    July 20, 2020 / 29 Comments

Forts are fantastic to visit. They’re full of history and grandeur. When walking towards a fort, I’m always in awe. You usually don’t have to travel far to find a fort or fortress. Since there are numerous forts in the world. India alone has over 1000 forts. Not everything with fort in the name is an actual fort though, like Fort Worth in Texas. The largest town named after a fort. Best Forts in the World: Middle East We start with the forts in the Middle East. A region with lots of strive and history. We had a good travel year, last year. We traveled in Europe, mostly the western part. We had trips in The Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, France, Germany, Czech Republic and Spain. Our 2019 travels were fantastic in one word. January We started the New Year with friends in Almere. Playing board games and watching the fireworks. After this we started our 2019 travels with a visit to Uden on Ice our with my sister and nieces during Christmas break. Ice skating and tubing is so fun to do. February 14, 2020 / 2 Comments

2020 has already started, and we have already made some trips. But in this post I want to take you back to 2018. We did a lot of trips, mostly in The Netherlands. It wasn’t the easiest year for us, but we got through it and we were still able to travel. Here are our 2018 travels per month. January A quiet month, we only took 3 trips. With Yuri’s class we went to castle de Haar and had a guided tour here. It was fun and informative. On a good level the kids learned a lot about how the owners have lived in the castle over the centuries. De…

5 Things to do in the Gorges du Verdon with kids

    February 12, 2020 / 9 Comments

France has so many beautiful regions to explore! A few years ago we visited the Gorges du Verdon region in spring. Our lodgings were at campsite RCN Les Collines de Castellane in the town of  Castellane. The weather was warm already (most days even hot) and there is plenty to do in the Gorges du Verdon with kids. A visit to the Gorges itself is not described in this article. We planned that for the last day of our trip, but since rain was predicted, we weren’t in for a day out on the water. So no Gorges, but a visit to grottes and Grasse that day. Things to see…

    An afternoon in Ljubljana

    February 11, 2020 / 17 Comments

We loved Ljubljana, the city has a laid-back vibe, and is perfect to stroll around in. That’s just what we did one afternoon in Ljubljana. We stood on a campsite on the edge of Ljubljana and took a bus to the center of town. It stopped right in front of our campsite and went all the way to the center of town, very easy. Here’s what is perfect to do when you stroll around Ljubljana one afternoon. Stroll around the center The city center with it’s broad, low traffic avenues is perfect for wandering around. Watch and enjoy the buildings still there from the Baroque and Jugendstil periods. We had…

    Dreaming about long term traveling

    February 10, 2020 / 1 Comment

I remember as a child looking at my globe and making up journeys I could take, where I would go. I could dream about this for hours. Others dreamed about their wedding gown or being a doctor when they’d grew up. I wanted to be an archeologist and travel to Iran, Australia, the USA, basically everywhere. I dreamed of being in the Outback, like the characters of my favorite tv show The Flying Doctors. Go chasing those waterfalls in Australia. Wishing to explore the ruins of the Maya I read about in Archeology books. I wanted to backpack in the National Parks of the USA, which I read about in…

    Dreaming about (part-time) van life

    February 7, 2020 / 3 Comments

Those idyllic pictures of people cozying up in their van or just outside their van. Or similarly a picture of a neverending highway, makes me want to hit the road and live the van life. What’s the draw in van life Why am I drawn to this picture of the van life? It’s the idylic of going wherever you wanna go. In theory, you can roadtrip around the World, and since I have a very lenghty bucketlist, that sounds divine. We would have our own place while traveling. A van looks like a payable solution to see the whole world. The cosily feeling of a VW van is appealing. The…

7 Things to do in the Dordogne with Kids

    January 30, 2020 / 20 Comments

My very first blogpost on the KarsTravels site! I start with one about France. We visited the Dordogne region in France in spring time. The weather isn’t as hot as it can be in summer and there are plenty of things to do and see. So let me highlight 7 of our favorite outings to go on with kids in the Dordogne, from chateaus to boatrides. Dordoge with kids: a list of fun things to do 1.
